MAKERERE- Water crisis has hit Makerere University’s magnificent girls’ hall Mary Stuart, causing jamming sanitation also risking residents’ health situation.  

When Journalism@mak visited the hall on Friday, our reporter found a deteriorated health situation as toilets are left unflushed causing them to stink.  

These constructions are currently taking place between Lumumba and Mary Stuart halls.

Officials said the problem has been escalated by ongoing renovation at the hall and fixing of new pipes and John Tweheyo, one who heads the constructers said the constructions involve digging down into the ground causing them to temper with the water supply system.

"This is a very complicated and disturbing situation especially to us who have morning lectures as early as 7am because we have to make a long line in the bathrooms in order to fetch water for bathing. I have not attended my morning lectures for a week now because of this water problem. "Winnie Mulungi, a second year student and resident of Mary Stuart hall remarked.

Students can now only fetch water from the neighboring Boys’ Lumumba hall.

Mr James Byomuhangi, the chief custodian Mary Stuart Hall said the authorities are very much aware of the inconveniences caused to students.

“Them [Mary Stuart residents] being female but you ought to bear with us for the time being since we are working tirelessly to finish these constructions. We are so much sorry and we promise to rectify the problem as early as we can,” Byomuhangi said.
