How Inter University Beach Carnival Flopped
Submitted by Christopher Tusiime on
The organizing committee of the Inter University Beach Carnival faced ‘awkwardness, difficult challenges and financial constraints’ on Saturday October 11th, 2015 as students set off for Sport beach Entebbe.
The event was organized by the Dynamic Events, a group of skilled young students of Makerere University that includea Ssevume Christine the chief organizer, Dos Santos, the Human Resource Manager, Agaba Denis, the marketing manager among others. The group is one year old and has arranged four successful beach carnivals since its birth according to Dos Santos the human resource manager.
The organizing committee reported that since the end of the first two weeks of this semester, the preparations for the inter university beach carnival have been going well on holding other factors constant.
Around 500 hundred students were expected to turn up and every University was to have two minibuses to transport the students.
On Saturday by 1:00pm, the transport means were at the respective place like Freedom square for Makerere University, Senate building at Kyambogo University, main library at KIU and MUBS. Other universities were to board from venues that they had selected. After a few minutes into 1pm, heavy rain started pouring but it took a short time.
By 02:00pm, only few students had reported to the buses at Makerere. At Kyambogo four hours later after buses parked at the campus, not even a single student had turned up.
However, by 5:00 pm two buses were full and set off to the sport beach with organisers having sarcastic smiles with their heads down.
Mr. Dos Santos said that this event has caused them a lot of loses; they had planned for about 500 students from at least 8 universities but to their surprise only 86 students turned up from only 5 universities participated which included, Makerere, MUBS, KIU, MUST and Gulu University.
"I cannot blame Kyambogo for they have not shown up, after all they are villagers" Dos Santos said.
However, besides all the hardships and embarrassments that the even went through, it was a blessing to a few that turned up. Only 9 boys were left unmatched to any girls and found their ways to other group during the swimming.
A lot of games were played like swimming, Rudolf, playing cards, arm wrestling dancing among others which Makerere emerged the winner except dancing where it was challenged by Gulu University.
By 10:00pm, the couples had fallen into unmanageable situation financially and asked to vacate the beach. Everybody was taken to his or her place of residence.
