Makerere Shines At the Inter Media Challenge Awards 2015

This year’s inter- institutional media (IMC) competitions came to an end on Friday night at Serena hotel-Victoria hall Kampala in a red carpet event dubbed “the black tie event” with Makerere University Journalism students scooping 10 awards.

The awards night begun at 7pm and ended by midnight, the event was majorly preordained for media students from all universities/ institutions and mainstream journalists who participated and were nominated respectively.

The awards to media students that won were presented to them by mainstream journalists while media students also presented the awards to the various mainstream journalists that emerged victors that night.

“This was done as a way to bridge the gap between the two” Abaas Mpindi the CEO to IMC said.

Out of the twenty awards that were to be given out to students, Makerere scooped over ten awards including the winner for the overall bulletins both Luganda and English categories. Among winners from Makerere is Zahra Abdul, a fourth journalism student who took home three awards for best overall English reporter, best individual category photographer and best entertainment English reporter,

Helen Birabwa emerged best environment reporter under English category, Asiimire Joanitah emerged best health reporter under English category and Namata violet best sports reporter under the same category.

Winners from Makerere University under the Luganda category were Nanfuka Sharuwa, best international reporter and Lukwago Kulifu, best environment reporter while almost all the other participants were nominated.

The best overall anchors English and Luganda were Joreme Kule of Makerere Business Institute and Rodney Ssejoba of UMCAT School of Journalism.

Among the winners from the mainstream journalists, were Maurice Mugisha of Ntv Uganda for the Bbale Francis best English news anchor, Rukshana Namuyimba of NBS TV for the Rosemary Nankabirwa best female English News Anchor and Balunabba Wamala of CBS for the Dan Kyazze best radio news anchor.

These particular awards were given out by the families of these deceased journalists in memory of their souls and great contribution to the media. The night was concluded by remarks from the CEO of the media challenge Mr. Abaas Mpindi.

He said the media challenge was to enable media students meet mainstream journalist and create a healthy relationship with them.  He also gave the background of the media challenge, paid respect to the fallen media souls who were supportive of the idea.
