Mixed reactions have greeted the shock resignation of Moses Basena from his role as Sports Club Villa head coach after only three months in charge.

Basena succeeded Wasswa Bbosa and agreed a three-year contract with the club, being appointed by the interim committee of William Nkemba.

However, early poor performances and relegation struggles saw the former UPDF tactician terminating the contract.

In his reign as the Blues manager, Basena has had a winless run of eight games registering four draws and losing on the remaining four occasions.

The Jogoo Salongo, who came close to winning the league tittle last season, have had a bad run for their money in the 2018-2019 Uganda Premier League season. By the time Basena threw in the towel Villa was among the last three clubs on the 16-team table scoring only 10 goals, conceding 15 goals and gaining four points.

The former Uganda Cranes coach says he was so desperate after mounting pressure from the Jogoo fans having had a 2-2 draw in his last match against Tooro United FC on Wednesday at Buhinga Grounds. He said: “I have tried to do everything right to see that the club performs well, I think it’s time for some one new to come in. I have to give way for the new coach.”

As Villa waits for a new coach, fans have had their say about Basena’s resignation.

Bunduka Derrick from Fort Portal, who has supported SC Villa since 1984, thinks that Villa has many problems starting with the administration. “I am most times hurt by the events happening at the club ranging from administration, technical, organization, and finance. We seem not to have a proper admistarative structure since the late Patrick Kawooya left the club which needs to be addressed,” he said.

Balagadde Ramos, a Villa supporter since 2004 and a presenter on Radio Sapientia, said that Basena was not the right man for the job since the start of the season. “Villa need someone who can change their dressing room with favorable tactics and mentality into Jogoo players,” he stated.

Muganga Fahad, a second year journalism student at Makerere University thinks that it is hard for any coach to get good results for SC Villa since it is in transition. “Villa lost a number of players last season remaining with very many aged players and some are unfit. They cannot perform in this competitive league,” he explained. Muganga adds that Basena wasn’t the only problem at the club and that they will continue to struggle regardless of his departure. “This also happened to Express FC last season,” the sports journalist said.

Baguma Moses, a second year journalism student at Makerere University, said that it is good for any team to adapt change and new ideas. “If Basena has failed to get a single win, really that is not how football works; you need to get good results to stay at the club. Let Villa try someone else,” he noted.
