The Bible Society of Uganda (BSU) this week celebrated 50 years of existence with a ceremony at which a 27-billion-shilling housing project was launched.

At the ceremony on Friday, November 23, BSU, which opened its offices in Uganda in 1968, speeches, performances and praises were on display. A modern housing facility to cost twenty seven billion shillings was launched.

In his opening remarks, the chairperson Board of Trustees, Pastor Christian Aliddeki, noted that as an institution BSU had grown this far and still had higher grounds to reach. He expressed that as an institution they are looking forward to construction of a modern edifice as he thanked all those that were contributing to what he called a noble cause.

Rev Canon Dr. Olivia Nassaka Banja, the BSU chairperson, described participation in the fundraising as an opportunity for members to play a role in a legacy project. She categorized the kind of sponsors required under Platinum (100 million), Gold (50 million), Silver (25 million), Bronze (10 million) and Wood (five million) to be paid over a period of three years—2019-2021.

This saw a number of attendees go up to pledge as individuals, families, children and the old. As part of the project, people were called upon to join the handwritten Bible exercise that will be compiled at the end of it all. Each verse for those that wish for their hand writings to appear is costing one hundred thousand shillings and 29 people have so far taken part in this. This is all in a bid to raise funds for the fifty years’ legacy of a modern facility.

According to Justice Ezekiel Mucunguzi  the core aims of the Bible Society is to translate, publish and distribute the word of God and all be done at subsidized costs to see that every individual can access the word. He thus commends the journey Bible Society has walked for these fifty years as they look up for more.

Bible Society Uganda is one of the 244 bible societies in the world .Over the years this Non-Government Organisation has seen the translation of the Bible from English to various local languages in Uganda. It brings all Bible denominations together including Anglicans, Catholics, Pentecostals, Seventh Day Adventists and Orthodox among others.
