Makerere University has cancelled the additional graduation fees as students' strike enters day two.

In a statement issued to the entire students’ body, Prof Ddumba, the Vice Chancellor of Makerere University said the graduation fees would be maintained at Sh. 90,000.

"Following consultation with the University council, the Chief Governing Body of Makerere University, Management wishes to inform all students that the graduation fee shall remain at Sh. 90,000.

The decision was made, a meeting between the University council, the student’s guild representative the Guild president, Ivan Bwowe, and the Inspector general of Police, Kale Kayihura.

While Adressing the students, Kayihura informed the students about the presidents’ position on fees increments.

“We appealed to the president, when fees were increase last time, and he made his position clear that parents should not be unduly burdened,” Kayihura said.

He urged the University to always consult the government and the president, before increasing any fees. He also advised students against strikes.

“Whatever issues you have, do not handle them like war. Channel them through the students’ guild,” he said.

Students speak out

Ivan Bwowe, the Students’ guild president said that the University should always communicate through the right channels before passing policies.

“We did not receive any minute from the council, showing that they had decided to increase graduation fees. However I am glad that the increment has been scrapped,” Bwowe said.

Musa Byamaka, the students’ information minister in the guild, said that scrapping off the increment is fair to everyone, since students come from different walks of life.
