Profam is offering free installation of the Intra Utrine Contraceptive Device (IUD) and other family planning methods to Makerere students during the health week that started Tuesday, 16th October 2018.

Profam is a family planning organization that deals with various ways of helping people to have planned births through methods like the coil (IUD), condom use, implants, among others.

According to Dr Sam Mwanje, a health worker with the organization, the program is to help female students from unexpected pregnancies that have made their lives miserable and led to death of some through abortions.

"We are here to help you and teach you on how you can do away the unwanted pregnancies,” said Dr Mwanje.

Dr Mwanje reveals that the organization is now putting emphasis on the IUDs, because it is like a natural method and causes no infertility and diseases like cancer. He adds that once you are ready to have a child, you move straight to the health center and the coil is removed unlike pills and injections which have a grace period that must first expire before one can become pregnant.

The other method being emphasized by Profam is safe use of female and male condoms.

Students have been called upon to always carry a condom because at times unexpected sex is possible. Dr Racheal Namata, also from Profam explains that condoms carry expiry dates which should be critically followed before their use.

Betty Namale, a student however says it is difficult to carry condoms as it portrays a wrong image. "Many people say you are a prostitute and some men can decide to leave you claiming you are cheating on them," said Namale.

The health week has been organized by the 84th guild cabinet through the ministry of health and it is to run for four days until 19th October, 2018.
