A man has been arrested at the Department of Journalism and Communication lab attempting to steal computer accessories. Police has since identified him as Ssebinywa Grace Bruce.

He was seen checking different computers and removing hard disks and claimed to be working with an external technician the department has been using.

According to Josephine Namayanja, a fourth-year student of Bachelor of Journalism and Communication, she saw the suspect in the lab around 10am but thought he was a Masters student.

“I didn’t mind about him. But in the afternoon he come back; that is when he was caught red-handed with a hard disk which he had removed from one of the computers in the lab.”

John Okoth, the lab attendant called police who came and arrested the suspect. He was found with more than three sim cards, a flash disk, a key and a screw driver which he was using to open the computers to remove the hard disks.

Okoth said he sat in his work station but heard something unusual, a sound of someone opening a CPU prompting him to check, only to find a stranger stealing a disk.

“I called the police, it immediately arrived and took the culprit. I gave a statement and I am going back after checking everything in the lab to give more information,” Okoth told journalism@mak.

The suspect has been detained at Makerere police station as investigations continue.
