The outgoing Makerere guild president,   David Bala Bwiruka on wednesday last week asked students at the oldest University in Uganda to vote for FDCs Kizza Besigye during the fourth coming elections, citing that he is the best presidential candidate who will solve Uganda’s challenges.

Speaking at the elections of the new electoral commission that dissolved the 81st guild cabinet in CEDAT conference hall, Makerere University, Bala said that Uganda has faced a lot of challenges that need a fresh mind from a fresh president, to solve. He added that what president Museveni has failed to accomplish in 30 years of his rule can’t be accomplished in 5 years that will put him back to the same office.

Bala also narrated that during his term of office as the Makerere guild president, he faced a lot of challenges, some of which stemmed from the government’s failure to intervene in the management of the University which has always cause strikes at the institution.

”I have faced a lot of challenges with the management of this University and the government has rarely intervened. I will pin them[challeneges] on all the notice boards for you to read. I ask [you] fellow gallant Makerereans to vote Besigye for he is the only solution to ever increasing Makerere problems that the NRM has failed to solve,” Bala said.

Bala also asked Makerere students to get involved in voting and help other Ugandans to know the importance of engaging in the February 18th presidential elections, adding that it’s the only way of getting a leader of their choice. He also urged them to make sure their votes are well guarded against rigging by being very vigilant at their respective polling stations.

“Makerereans, I ask you to take part in voting and help other Ugandans to know the power of their vote.  Don’t only vote but also secure your vote jealously to pave way for a better Makerere and Uganda at large” he added.

However, when Makerere university private students demonstrated over 10% tuition increment in August 2014, president Museveni intervened and asked the University administration to drop the policy saying that the government would meet the costs.

“Today I held a meeting with administrators and student leaders of Makerere University and directed the university to suspend the 10% increment on tuition for new students. Government will meet the cost of the increment this academic year,” Museveni told the angry students who were striking in 2014.

Museveni also added that, “Government will take up payment of teaching staff salaries and increase the salaries and wages’ allocation to public universities to Shs 300 billion next financial years. This will take the burden of paying teaching staff away from private students.”

This allocation has not been effected yet as ministry of education and sports still thinks the money is too much, yet lecturers are still demanding for their salary increment saying that Museveni had promised as so.

The speaker of the 81st guild, Jothan Yamurebire, is the student leader currently at Makerere University. He will be working with the students’ dean, Cyriaco Kabagambe as elections of the new guild president and his cabinet is being prepared.
