After a protracted court battle between Bazil Mwotta and Roy Ssemboga, the latter was today morning sworn in as the Makerere University 82 guild president, six months late.

Ssemboga takes over from David Bala Bwiruka.
In a ceremony that took place in the Senior Common Room and lasted for about one hour, even Guild Representative Councilors (GRCs) were sworn in.
The ceremony was presided over by the vice chancellor Prof John Ddumba-Ssentamu, Dean of students and the 81 guild speaker, Jothan Burobuto.
Ddumba-Ssentamu asked the new leaders to work hand in hand with the university management to solve problems facing the institution.
“I know Makerere is facing both short and long term problems but it’s all about working together that we can solve them simultaneously… my office is always open for you.” he said.
Ssemboga congratulated members of the cabinet upon all the struggles they have gone through to make it where they are.
“I really thank the almighty who has made us reach all this far… we must work hand in hand if we are to lift the name of our great institution again.
“I do not think the cabinet members I appointed are the wisest but are the lucky ones, we still need to help each other as we push to meet our manifesto,” he added.
With the powers entrusted with the guild president by Article 22(1) (d) of the guild constitution, 17 ministers were appointed; Maria Nnatabi (vice president) Agnes Abashaba (deputy prime minister), Nicholas Aijuka (security minister) among others.
However, about five ministries have remained vacant because Ssemboga said he needs a settled mind to appoint members for such ministries since they are sensitive. These include, prime minister, ministry of health, academic affairs , student affairs and Gender, ethics and integrity.
“Most of the members of the house have failed to meet the requirements for such ministries… I promise by Wednesday, I will be through with all this.” said the fourth year medicine and surgery student.
Following the orders from the university tribunal, the electoral commission organized a re-election at the school of education on Friday September 2, where Roy Ssemboga emerged the winner beating his main rival, Mwotta
