Roy Ssemboga, one of the twelve candidates vying for the guild presidential seat at Makerere University thrilled students yesterday at the Guild presidential debate in the main hall with his solution to 60% tuition policy.

During the debate, ssemboga told the students that once elected into office, the policy will be solved by borrowing money from different financial agencies in the early days of the semester so that the University can ran smoothly and pay back later after students have completed payments towards the exams.

“The 60% tuition policy is aimed at generating early resources so that the university can run smoothly in its earlier times of the semester, however, borrowing money from financial agencies helps the University to run their errands smoothly as well as giving enough time  to our poor parents [to look for tuition],” he said.

The 60% fees policy has caused a lot of chaos as students resort to striking whenever it gets to the deadline of every semester since its implementation by the university council in 2013-2014 academic year.

Students who jumped and screamed singing his (Roy) name and other chants that were praising their candidate, told Journalism@Mak that their candidate is the best for the 'ivory tower' because of his promising remarks.

“Ssemboga deserves to be our guild president because he has been in the University leadership and has achieved much. With his intellectual way of doing things, Makerere University will again be the best in Africa” one student said.

Ssemboga did not only promise to tackle only the 60% fees policy but also other problems facing the University including providing the perimeter wall, deposition of more security officers in the University, solving the issue of missing marks that hinder Graduation and setting minimum standards for places of residence for all students.
